Chelsea are plotting to hijack Manchester United’s deal to sign Southampton and England left-back Luke Shaw, who is reportedly on the verge of completing a £30m transfer to Old Trafford.



The Blues, who have released long-serving left-back Ashley Cole, have asked to be kept informed about how United’s deal to sign Shaw is progressing, according to the Daily Mail. It was reported on Friday that the 18-year-old is considering other options after the Red Devils handed their long-serving left-back Patrice Evra a one-year contract extension.

United remain keen to sign Shaw, who is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising full-backs, and will press on with plans to sign the teenager despite handing France international Evra a new deal.

However, if Chelsea up their interest, the situation could change rapidly. Blues’ boss Jose Mourinho opted to play Cesar Azpilicueta - a right-back by trade - at left-back for much of the 2013/14 campaign, but boyhood Chelsea fan Shaw knows the chance to cement his status as the first-choice left-back at Stamford Bridge is there if the west London outfit produce a bid to match United’s.

While newly-appointed Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has pulled the plug on deals to sign David Moyes targets Toni Kroos and Cesc Fabregas - of Bayern Munich and Barcelona, respectively - the veteran Dutch coach is happy for the club to sign the impressive Shaw, who is part of England’s squad for next month’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

If Chelsea step up their pursuit of the youngster, the decision could come down to which club Shaw personally wants to join - which would subsequently test his loyalty to the club he grew up supporting.
