Mathieu Debuchy has confirmed that he will be joining Arsenal after he returns home from the 2014 World Cup following France’s elimination at the quarter-final stage.
Debuchy was part of the starting line-up in Rio de Janeiro at the famous Maracana, where an early header from Germany centre-back Mats Hummels was enough to decide the match.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is in Brazil as a pundit for French television and will have been watching on as the right-back was picked ahead of Bacary Sagna – the player he will be replacing at the Gunners, revealing the move is on to a reporter from TF1 television.
“Yes, I will be joining Arsenal for next season,” he is quoted as telling the reporter by Metro.
Sagna’s contract has expired and, while in Brazil with Les Bleus, he confirmed he would be joining Premier League champions Manchester City on a free transfer. Some were puzzled at the move because Pablo Zabaleta was undoubtedly Manuel Pellegrini’s first choice right-back, but Sagna does bring versatility in defence.
Debuchy was a former star at Ligue 1 side Lille before joining Newcastle United two seasons ago, where he has impressed many pundits when he has been able to avoid injury, which has been something of a problem for him.
Arsenal already have Carl Jenkinson and Hector Bellerin as right-back options, but both are still young and the 28-year-old France international will provide some experience in the position once he completes what is reported to be a €10million deal.
